Respected market analysts The Finance Ghost and Mark Tobin joined forces with investor relations firm Keyter Rech Investor Solutions (“KRIS”) in 2022 to introduce a new knowledge-sharing platform to the South African investment market. Unlock the Stock makes JSE stock information accessible to retail investors looking for information on these stocks.

It is the first online platform targeted solely at this group of investors, who rarely, if ever, have the opportunity to engage directly with JSE-listed companies.

Providing a unique platform for small- to mid-sized JSE-listed companies in particular, Unlock the Stock gives participating companies a chance to connect directly with retail investors, with each session featuring either one or two stocks, followed by a facilitated Q&A.

Hosted by The Finance Ghost and Mark Tobin via Zoom every month, Unlock the Stock allows investors to join the session for a presentation by the company, which is followed by an engaging Q&A session with company management.

It will position your company actively with private retail investors – “make sure your ticker code makes it onto a watchlist”.

It allows you to share alternative investment stories – “what really drives your company’s success aside from the financials?”

It is the first channel to private retail investors – a still untapped, growing and lucrative market.

Participants should be able to claim against skills spend for the purposes of scorecard allocations (this will fall under the “unaccredited training” portion of skills development).

Hosted by The Finance Ghost and Mark Tobin, the sessions are structured as follows:

  • A 12-minute company presentation (per company; limited to two companies per session) or a 25-minute presentation if only one company is presenting.
  • A 20-minute Q&A session. Each company has a separately hosted chat room and investors can also switch between chat rooms.

The Finance Ghost

The Finance Ghost is a CA(SA) (in real life of course) and ex-investment banker who has dedicated himself to explaining diffcult financial concepts to South African investors and business owners. Drawing on over a decade of experience in financial markets, he writes the daily Ghost Mail publication enjoyed by 100 000 unique readers every month. He also contributes on a weekly basis to respected publications like Financial Mail and Daily Maverick. With hundreds of podcasts under his belt, The Finance Ghost is the co-founder and co-host of the Magic Markets podcast and research platform, focusing on global stock insights. He has also hosted numerous podcasts on the Ghost Mail platform, as well as multiple Unlock the Stock sessions with management teams of local listed companies.

Mark Tobin

Mark Tobin has 16 years of experience across various investment and finance roles, having worked in Ireland, the UK, Australia, and South Africa. In 2018 Mark launched Coffee Microcaps as a platform to connect microcap investors with ASX Microcap industrial stocks. Coffee Microcaps hosts online and in-person events, conferences, and microcap fund manager interviews. Mark writes a free monthly newsletter, which can be found on the Substack platform. He currently has a personal X following of 2 100 while Coffee Microcaps has amassed a significant following of nearly 5 500 on X, as well as considerable followers on other social media platforms, including YouTube and LinkedIn.
