Respected market analysts The Finance Ghost and Mark Tobin joined forces with investor relations firm Keyter Rech Investor Solutions (KRIS) in 2022 to introduce a new knowledge-sharing platform to the South African investment market. Unlock the Stock provides retail investors with access to information and management of JSE and A2X stocks. It is the first online platform targeted solely at this group of investors, who rarely, if ever, have the opportunity to directly engage with the management of listed companies.

The platform provides direct and dedicated access to listed companies looking to connect with retail investors on a more personal level, with a presentation followed by a facilitated and dedicated Q&A session.

Unlock the Stock actively encourages listed companies to share financial information and to communicate their strategy, investment case, outlook, and any other meaningful background to support a deeper understanding of the company by retail investors.

It will position your company actively with private retail investors – “make sure your ticker code makes it onto a watchlist”.

It allows you to share alternative investment stories – “what really drives your company’s success aside from the financials?”

It is the first channel to private retail investors – a still untapped, growing and lucrative market.

It calls for a relatively small investment – affordable for most companies.

It is driven by a group of respected individuals who are passionate about retail investing in South Africa.

Participants should be able to claim against skills spend for the purposes of scorecard allocations (this will fall under the “unaccredited training” portion of skills development).

The finer details

Unlock the Stock is hosted monthly on a Thursday at 12:00– the 45-minute sessions are structured as follows:

  • A 12-minute company presentation (per company and limited to two companies per session) or
    a 25-minute company presentation (if a company prefers a solo slot).
  • A 20-minute Q&A session, with each company having a separately hosted chat room and where the investor can switch between chat rooms.

The Finance Ghost

The Finance Ghost is an ex-investment banker and CA(SA) dedicated to making business less scary and investing more accessible to retail investors. With over a decade of experience in technical roles in financial markets, strategy roles in corporates and as a founder of start-ups, he now has a strong focus on investor education and helping people make better decisions with their money and businesses.

He is the author of the daily Ghost Mail publication, enjoyed by over 85,000 investors every week. He is the co-founder of the Magic Markets podcast (regularly a top 10 investing podcast in South Africa) and Magic Markets Premium, which now has hundreds of subscribers that enjoy research on global stocks. Mark Tobin

Mark Tobin has 15 years’ experience across various investment and finance roles, having worked in Ireland, the UK, Australia and South Africa. In 2018 Mark launched Coffee Microcaps as platform to connect microcap investors with ASX Microcap industrial stocks. Coffee Microcaps hosts online and in-person events, conferences and microcap fund manager interviews. Mark also writes a free monthly newsletter, which can be found on the Substack platform.
